ROYAL MELBOURNE YACHT SQUADRON

MUIR Architecture in collaboration with BREATHE Architecture and OPENWORK have been engaged for redevelopment works to the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron in St Kilda, Melbourne.

The Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron has played a significant role along the St Kilda foreshore for over 140 years and still functions today as one of Victoria’s oldest yacht clubs.

The project presents itself as an opportunity to negotiate the historical context and inherent historical characteristics of the building. In doing so the design brings the clubhouse up to contemporary standards in order to enhance the member’s experience through expanded hospitality, clubhouse amenities and direct public engagement with a connection to the foreshore and Catani Gardens. A key aspect of the design is to encourage a more diverse and inclusive membership.

As a building that sits within the round, it is important for the design to acknowledge its role within the public domain and how it can give back to the land and communities that surround it.
