Porto Antigo is located on the River Douro, Portugal. The house is designed as a holiday home. The brief anticipates the occupation of the house not through residing in the everyday but rather the in-between space generated for pausing.
The steeply sloping site is marked by stone terrace walls. Planning requirements stipulate that the existing stone house to the west of the site is incorporated - new dwelling grows out from this nodal point. The locally found precedent of stone wall/fence becoming house strongly influenced the overall response to site. The house is defined by and responds directly to the lie of the land inhabiting the landscape. Stairs and levels are used as a platforms for viewing and occupying space.
